Even the most cursory glance at this bountifully bejeweled bear makes it clear that where Lorelei Lee is concerned, diamonds are still "a girl's best
friend." Although the great Alvin Colt was the show's designer, who was better
suited to designing for the dazzling Miss Channing than that "rajah of rhinestones"
himself, Bob Mackie? We're still in the flapper era, so Lorelei Bear (as did
Miss C.) wears a sleeveless, drop-waist (drop-dead!), lined, black velvet dress
whose "skirt" is defined by six limb-revealing panels. (At the back there are
also two long "cape-like" panels that descend from the neckline.) Now the dress
is entirely outlined with small, round rhinestones, and more rhinestones drip
from neckline to panel-end in a variety of additional shapes: oval, diamond,
triangular. She wears brilliant, 3-strand rhinestone bracelets, "rings," and
a double-strand rhinestone necklace. Beneath it all - black velvet bikini-panties
and black fishnet stockings. "Onyx" and rhinestone-"fringed" brooches adorn
her black leather, strapped heels; and a rhinestone and black-velvet tiara sits
atop her platinum, chin-length wig. Her wide, Channing eyes are made of "onyx"
and rhinestone with black velvet lashes; her ruby-red lips of "rubies"! By
the way, not only are almost all of the rhinestones discreetly hand-sewn on,
she even comes with a "Bob Mackie" couture card and label (sewn onto the front
middle panel). That "little girl from Little Rock" has come a long way
from home - and she sure has a lotta rocks now!
